Practical AI for Teachers: Where to Start

If you're interested in AI but aren't sure where it belongs in your teaching day, start with a piece of work you already need to do: preparing a lesson, explaining an assignment to families, turning a page of notes into a plan you can use.
Practical AI for teachers starts with choosing a manageable task, giving the AI enough context, and deciding whether its response actually improves your work. You can learn quite a bit from that first attempt without redesigning how you teach.
I believe AI can help teachers and leaders take things off their plate and produce better output. The reason to pursue that is the opportunity it creates for students and staff: more attention for the people who need us and the work only we can do.
Here are a few places I'd start.
Lesson preparation. Think about the point where planning tends to stall. Perhaps you have the learning goal but want another way to introduce it. You could ask for two possible openings, explain what students already know, and name the materials and time available. Then choose or adapt an idea that makes sense for your class. A useful starting request is small enough that you can judge the response.
Communication. You may already know what families need to hear, but getting it into a clear message is another task. Start with the facts and ask for a draft organized around what families need to know or do. Read it for accuracy, tone and accessibility before sending. Keep names, student information and sensitive circumstances out of a first practice attempt.
Organizing preparation. A rough list of things to prepare for a lesson or event can become a checklist to work from. Ask AI to separate materials, preparation and unresolved questions. Keep your original notes beside the result so you can see what changed. This is an approachable way to explore AI because you already understand the work it is helping organize.
Thinking through an idea. Sometimes it helps to have another set of questions. Describe a proposed activity without student details and ask what might be unclear to a learner, or what assumptions the directions make. Treat those questions as suggestions to consider. Your knowledge of the class determines which ones deserve attention.
How to choose your first AI task
Choose something you understand well and can review before anyone else uses it. A first attempt should give you room to notice what works, correct what doesn't, and decide whether the process is worth repeating.
For example, try organizing preparation for a familiar lesson. The following is a fictional practice prompt, not a tested tool demonstration:
“Help me organize preparation for a 30-minute lesson. Students will read two short passages and discuss how the authors support their claims. My notes: choose the passages, make copies, prepare two discussion questions, decide how students will record evidence, and leave five minutes for a written response. Turn these notes into a preparation checklist. Keep any additional suggestions in a separate section, and list decisions I still need to make.”
You supply the purpose and your rough notes. The requested output is a checklist, with suggestions kept separate. Your job is to decide whether it preserves what you intended and makes preparation easier to follow.
If the response is too elaborate, ask for a shorter checklist. If it assumes technology you don't have, make sure you say that. That follow-up is part of learning to give useful direction. You don't need a perfect opening prompt.
Afterward, consider whether you would use the result. Did it organize your thinking? Did you have to spend more effort correcting it than the help was worth? Either answer tells you something useful about that task and approach.
What teachers should keep in their hands
Use a tool your school permits, and begin with fictional or non-sensitive material. An early experiment does not require student records or a difficult personnel situation.
AI-generated material still needs your review. You decide whether an activity supports the learning goal, whether a message will land well with families, and whether a suggested approach fits the students in front of you. Those decisions are part of the work, even when a tool helps with preparation.
If you lead a school, give teachers room to start this small. A useful professional learning conversation could begin with one task someone tried, what they kept, and what they changed. Hearing how a colleague made a decision can make the next attempt more approachable.
One thing to try this week
Pick a recurring preparation or communication task and give it one careful attempt with AI. Keep the original, the response and the version you would actually use. That gives you something concrete to learn from and, if it's useful, a starting point for the next time the task comes around.
